Get Ready to Fly with Locust Pose: Unlock the Strength You Never Knew You Had

Whoever said yoga was about gentle stretching and inner peace clearly hasn’t tried holding the Locust Pose, or Salabhasana if you’re into the whole Sanskrit thing. Hold it long enough, and you’ll see it’s the equivalent of launching a human rocketship, without leaving your living room.

Blast-off Prep (aka The Starting Position)

Getting into the position is deceptively easy. Lie flat on your belly. That’s it! Well, almost. The tricky part comes next. But first, let’s all just appreciate that a yoga pose begins with what’s basically napping posture. Nap enthusiasts, give yourselves a pat on the back. ????

The Countdown (aka How to Do It)

  1. Extend your arms back alongside your body, with your palms facing up.
  2. Draw your shoulders down and away from your ears. Imagine you’re a locust preparing for take-off and those shoulders are your aerodynamic wings.
  3. As you inhale, lift your head, chest, and legs off the ground.
  4. Gaze slightly forward or downward, holding your neck in a neutral position.
  5. Hold the pose for 5–10 breaths, or as long as it takes to imagine you’ve just crossed the English Channel in locust form.

What To Expect While You’re Soaring (aka The Benefits)

If you’re still questioning why anyone would voluntarily mimic a bug, consider these potential gains:

  • Back Strength: You’ll develop the lower back strength of a Marvel superhero.
  • Posture: You’ll be standing tall and looking people directly in the eyes or, you know, just seeing over the counter at Starbucks.
  • Digestion: This pose massages your internal organs, making it a natural laxative. So maybe don’t do this immediately after a big meal.

Landing (aka The End)

Gently release yourself back down, and take a few moments to enjoy the warmth flooding through your back and spine. You did it. You flew. Now, take this newfound feeling of freedom and channel it into whatever the day throws at you!

Warning: Though Salabhasana makes you feel invincible, it doesn’t actually grant you the ability to fly. Please don’t jump off your roof expecting to glide, lest you end up the protagonist in a story titled “Why Darwin Awards Were Invented.”

So, are you ready to try the Locust Pose? Come on; let’s give those back muscles the workout they’ve been begging for. ????✨
